This year’s national campaign, “In Every Story, There’s Strength,” highlights the power of personal stories to foster connection, understanding, and hope.
For 46 years, CIS has championed student well-being, placing mental health at the core of its mission. Since launching its Mental Health Initiative (MHI) 13 years ago, CIS has grown to become the largest school-based provider of mental health services in Harris County.
Communities In Schools (CIS) of Houston hosted its Soaring to New Heights gala on April 9 at The Post Oak Hotel, raising over $628,000 to support at-risk students across the Greater Houston area. The event was chaired by Caroline & Will Brown and Virginia & Cramer Williams and honored longtime board member Jan Redford, Ph.D., for her 46 years of dedication to CIS.

Chaired by Whitney and Marc Lawson and Lexi and Mike Marek, the event brought together corporate partners, community leaders, and supporters of CIS, a nonprofit organization dedicated to empowering at-risk students to stay in school and achieve in life.
CIS was asked to join Clemente Martinez Elementary School for the 2022-2023 school year as part of Houston Independent School District’s RISE Initiative. Our CIS Student Support Manager, Diana, was excited to enter a new campus and begin laying down the foundation for CIS services for her students, teachers, and families. When she arrived to the campus she discovered that parent involvement was low, largely due in part to 2 full years of normal campus activities disrupted by the pandemic.
CIS, an educational nonprofit, celebrates this year’s Social Work Month during March, with the theme “Social Work Breaks Barriers,” to highlight how social workers have enriched our society by empowering people and communities to overcome hurdles that prevent them from living life to the fullest.
Communities In Schools of Houston (CIS), an educational nonprofit, announces that it been has awarded a grant of $50,000 from H-E-B, with $40,000 dedicated to its Mental Health Initiative and $10,000 toward the 2023 Stay In School gala.
In September of 2012, CIS of Houston launched the CIS Mental Health Initiative to expand mental health support across the campuses we serve. For the past 43 years, supporting students' mental health and well-being has always been at the core of what we do, and with the MHI we were able to implement targeted efforts to collectively address the growing mental health needs on CIS campuses.
The campus-based CIS staff provides direct services within HISD schools in partnership with teachers and family members to help address the academic and non-academic needs of students.
We are excited to announce that the Texas Bar Foundation has awarded CIS a generous grant of $10,560 to support this year’s legal internship program. Grant funds will provide stipends to three high school student interns who will serve at public agencies and non-profits this summer.

Communities In Schools of Houston (CIS) has received its largest donation in our 43-year history of serving Houston’s students. This $13 million gift is part of a greater, transformative $133.5 million donation from philanthropist MacKenzie Scott to the Communities In Schools National Network. This contribution comes at a critical time when the global pandemic has created unparalleled challenges for students and families, including experiences of learning loss, social isolation, economic crisis, stress, and trauma.

Communities In Schools of Houston received a donation from Comerica Bank this fall of brand new bikes for our students to enjoy! The bikes will go to support the CIS Wellness on Wheels (WOW) program at Milby High School, as well as for CIS at Gallegos Elementary School in Houston Independent School District.
